HISTORY - The Moses Years
In October, 1954, a vision was given to the late Rev. Z. Brooks to organize this church. During this time, a mission began with six people; Rev. and Mrs. Z. Brooks, Mother E. Steen, A.D. Newsome, Addie Clinton and Jenny Persall.

Mt. Vernon then started its search for a location of worship. With a young and ambitious leader, we soon found that location at 2431 West Lake Street. The Lord blessed us during our short stay and we moved down the street to 2320 West Lake Street. Again, the Lord blesses us and we organized a choir and purchased our first piano. We soon outgrew this location.

We then moved to 1742 West Fulton Street, due to deterioration on that building, we only stayed a short time. Our Pastor, having a vision and a mind to work, led us to 10 South California Avenue. The devil decided to attack us with a fire, causing us to once again search for a new church home.

Pastor Brooks, knowing that the Lord would make a way, never gave up the search, and led us to 520 South California Avenue. From there, we journeyed to 3540-42 West Roosevelt Road. We had many ups and downs, many stumbling blocks were put in our paths, but none held us fast. We again landed back at 10 South California Avenue.

The Lord blessed us to take in many new members, organize new ministries, ad re-enforced our strength. Pastor Brooks, still being contented, knew the Lord had a better place in store for Mount Vernon. He kept striving and seeking until July of 1970, his dream came true. We were blessed to march into our present location at 3555 West Huron Street.

During our stay here, the Lord has done great things for us. Mount Vernon began to blossom by leaps and bounds until 1975, when Pastor Brooks’ health began to fail. He was ill for sometime, but never lost faith.
